ROSEWOOD ALPACA FARM
Rosewood Alpaca Farm is located at 1279 Double Bridges Road approximately 7 miles from Winder.
It is owned by Tommy and Jo Anne Downs who as descendents of farm families, we felt the desire to
experience that same bond with nature that our ancestors enjoyed, away from the hustle and bustle of the corporate culture, on a small rural farm. After much research, we decided that alpaca farming would best suit our needs. In the beginning, we visited several farms, attended alpaca shows and seminars before beginning the long process of clearing land for pasture, building shelters, fences and gates.
What attracts most people to alpacas is not only their beauty, but their luxurious fiber, or more interestingly, what can be done with the fiber, which is the path we chose.
Since the time of our initial purchase of our first alpacas, our herd and our experience has grown, as well
as our participation into fiber arts. Our interests in fiber arts developed as the more shows we attended
the more intrigued we became with it, as it is a centuries old process, that has been transcended down
from generation to generation. And as most fiber artists do, you must have the tools to produce the art,
such as the carding machine, spinning wheel, loom, etc., etc. But what makes our farm unique is that we
purchased a needle felting loom , exclusively developed for felting alpaca fiber by FELTLOOM INC., that
can process fiber into fabric in minutes, as the choice of colors and pattern designs are endless. The
fabric can then be used to produce a number of end products such as scarves, vests, handbags,
blankets, etc., that can be marketed through various outlets.
Along with our primary interest being in developing our alpaca farm, our secondary interest is to
establish a fiber arts studio where people interested in fiber arts can explore the endless possibilities
in classes for felting , spinning, dyeing, weaving, and working with a felt loom, all of which we feel will
promote and advance the alpaca industry.
